I like the way my family has our tree decorated, but it’s darn hard to photograph. On the one hand, I love to watch the lights glow all through the tree and the ornaments reflect the light, as in the photo at right. On the other hand, the ornaments themselves all have a very special history to me. In 2001, Daniel and I made the construction paper ornaments for our first Christmas at my apartment. In 2002, Daniel, Michael and I decorated the pine cones with paint and glitter. (For the foresters in my family, yes, I do recognize that it’s a fir tree, but the pine cones are easier to decorate). This year, we added the lego decorations assembled by Daniel. |

Actually, our home had three Christmas trees.
Daniel had a smaller tree in his room, with lights that glowed in eight different patterns. He’s sleeping next to its light on Christmas Eve. |
And we still have Daniel’s living Norfolk Pine tree. The tree was quite a survivor this year. Many of its branches died, but we figured out that it needed more light, and it sprouted several layers of new branches. The tree is special because Daniel has had it for six years, and because my family had Norfolk Pine when I was a kid. |

Here’s a quiz for you: Look at the picture below, and see if you can answer any of the questions:
Which decorations are the oldest? (Hint: They were made in Jonesboro, IL.) Which items came from Waterloo? What were the first decorations we made at my apartment? Construction Paper. Which decorations were made at St. Therese School? Which decorations have accumulated more each year? How many Santas are in the decorations? (This is a trick question, but Grandpa Bob and Grandma Carol are probably the only ones who might know the trick.) Bonus question: Who donated gave each Santa to us? Which decoration is Daniel's favorite? Which decoration is Michael's favorite? Is Matt too sentimental about this stuff?

And here’s Daniel’s Nativity Scene, to remember the fundamental meaning of Christmas. Daniel added a couple angel candle-holders that he found at a thrift store. May we all be able to celebrate how much is given to us! |
