Chief Hollow Horn Bear was born in 1850 and died in 1913. His Indian name was Matihehlogego. Before the treaty of 1868, he fought for freedom for the plains Indians. At first he raided the Pawnees. Later he attacked forts on the Bozeman trail. He defeated Lieutenant Fetterman. After the treaty of 1868, he worked for peace. He became head of the Indian police. He worked on treaties. He was good at speeches. He went to the inauguration for Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. Here are some interesting things. He had his face on a five dollar bill and a 14 cent stamp. His grandson, Duane Hollow Horn Bear, teaches Lakota language and met with Pope John Paul II in Rome. John Paul II is St. Therese’s pope.
